It use to be when you started a new site, one of the first things you did was get your site listed in DMOZ. It seems to be less of a SEO topic than it was in the past and was wondering if webmasters of new sites still think there is a value in getting your site listed in DMOZ.
Hi,
Many, many years ago, DMOZ used to be a useful listing because so many people set up directories that were basically DMOZ copies made by people who downloaded the DMOZ database and put it up on their site - that meant lots of useful backlinks. Indeed Google still have a copy of the DMOZ directory themselves; see here (http://www.google.com/dirhp).
Later Google filtered these sites and their links lost their value.
More recently, a DMOZ listing was quite useful because it passed (and maybe still passes) a lot of "trust", which is important in Google; but again I think less so than in the past.
In short, it's definitely worth submitting a site to DMOZ, but I'd recommend that you submit and forget!
Cheers,
Paz.
