Seems that at least one company is buying new domains according to domain availability research done by people, essentially domain squatting.

just as well I do manual searches :)

I'm pretty sure it happened to me when I tried to register a domain with GoDaddy. It was 4:00 am and I found a great domain name. I thought I'd hit the sack and sort out a credit card payment the next morning... when I tried to register it again it was gone.

It's possible that GoDaddy locked the domain on my behalf though, but in any case I'd recommend that people do domain name searches with a reputable registrar (I'd still use GoDaddy for example) and when they do find a name, book it immediately!

Cheers,
Paz.

I got a question. I found a domain name that has been bought a few months ago but hasn't been developed. Its got some great potential, especialy for the South African / SA tourism market. How much do you offer for a domain like that?

Depends on what the person is willing to sell it for, if they are ;)

They aren't selling it, but I want to make them an offer they can't refuse. Thats why I need help on reaching a good offer price while still having cash to develop it before I contact them.

That's a tricky one. Have a look at the digitalpoint forum, they have a buy and sell section there. You can have a look and maybe get an idea.

If you bid too high, you'll make them suspicious, too low and you'll have to rebid.... You'll only get one shot at it though so I'd say 40 USD max.
