Are we being brainwashed by Google?

I was reading a thread on WebmasterWorld (http://www.webmasterworld.com/google/3334098.htm) about webmasters being under the "Google mindshare" spell. The opening poster gives the usual type of conspiracy theory, however it did make me think.

While most people will focus on Google because of it's huge marketshare, at what stage does an SEO become so concerned about G that they can't think straight anymore?

well once I wanted to start cooking dinner and didnt' know what I had to work with... and my first thought was "google the fridge" :shhh:

Well, I must say that Google's branding has been highly effective. I mean, the other search engines are slowly becoming completely irrelevant as more and more people use google, plus theres the fact that at the same time google is gaining more and more valuable data about us to base its ads on and improve it's algorithm. It's slowly reaching the point where we'd be forced to use Google whether we liked it or not (ie, like Windows).
