Hi Everyone,

Maybe one day free directory submissions won't be as effective for search engine optimisation as they used to be, but I know of a few sites that are ranking well on submissions to quality directories with good titles and descriptions.

I've written a guide on best SEO practice for directory submissions (http://www.digital-m.co.za/articles/directory-submissions-guide.html) and would appreciate your comments.

If there's anything not clear or missing let me know. I haven't written anything about niche directories for example.

Cheers,
Paz.

Great article Paz,

I have also noticed how most of the free directories are just not getting indexed anymore,

I'm seeing it too, I guess it's part of Google's crawling sandbox. But there are a few, niche directories that are being indexed OK. It's just a matter of finding them.

If you have money to spend then you'll have no problems getting your directory links spidered and added to Google's index. That means that paid, high PR links work, which must be the last thing that Google wanted.

With one of my sites, some of the best backlinks are from free directories. Some have good PR in the category I'm in, but some not. But all of those are indexed.

Guess I'm luck

Directories seem to have been the hardest hit with the latest PR update. And Matt Cutts has never been clearer of late that they're looking for relevance and penalising paid links.

Against this background, surely the days of paid links and directories are nearly over when building backlinks from a Google point of view.

I agree, paid links is very risky these days, and free directories really aren't what they used to be.
I'm guessing that niche directories and the larger paid directories and dmoz will still carry weight, seeing that Google uses these to find new pages regularly.
