Do you think that directories have a future

My first thought was yes..due to the fact that the seo industry is growing all the time, and with the aim being highly on backlinks (and directories being the first place people are pointed), i assumed directories have a long time to go and will continue to benefit from the likes of fees for links

However, a member of seoguy (a moderator) thinks that creating a directory now is a very "stupid idea" and even if you arent doing it for money its still not worth the time

What do you guys think? :)

Mmmmmmmm I have to disagree with that theory...

Most search engines needs the intervention of human edited directories to ensure good quality results and good descriptions. I cannot see this changing soon, because as we know as technology improves to replace humans so does the techniques to fool them. Humans however cannot be fooled that easy. That is as far as human edited directories like DMOZ are concerned.

As far as other directories are concerned, I also cannot see that they will become redundant soon. As long as PR exist it will be part of the google algo. Further more it is important to realise that the structure of a directory are of great benefit for themed backlinks. I honestly cannot see why anyone would believe that directories will soon have no value. I would actually think that niche directories are the way to go these days. One thing I would like to add... directories that require a recipricol link has limited days and people should start looking at new strategies to get their directories going.

Starting a directory up simply for the money-making aspect can still be viable, as you get a lot of SEOs who still see value in any directory link, hahahaha.

But for SEO purposes.... Only the top ones are worth anything (hell, only the more popular ones get indexed - G's gone on a bit of a crusade to remove the crappy/spammy directories)

LOL... I think all the mods at seo guy have directories.

I think there's some sort of future for quality directories. Google's crawling sandbox means that they tend not to index "deep" pages so readily these days.

That means the old days when you could easily start a general directory with "arts" "business" "education" etc. categories are gone in my view.

I think anyone who wants to start a directory now, would be better off starting a niche directory eg an arts directory, business directory etc. because you've automatically moved all your sub-categories up a level, and you've also improved your chance of ranking because you've increased the keyword density, so to speak.

Cheers,
Paz.
