Yahoo have a new robots-nocontent tag (http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/ysearch/slurp/slurp-14.html) whereby you can block specific content on individual pages.

When I first heard about it I thought if you have content on a page that you want to block then you should just delete it but when I read the article the tag makes sense.

We have sites that are regulated and we have to add footer content stating this on every page and you could argue that it's lowering the relevance of that page, especially if you have copyright

Anyway, you can use it like this;

<div class="robots-nocontent">Non relevant footer text goes in here....</div>

Yahoo have led the way on these tags in the past. It'll be interesting to see if Google and MSN follow suit.

well, I'd prefer it to be in a <span> but then thats just me seperating the layout tags (divs) from everything else

I think it'd be a good idea too. It could arguably help with potential dup content problems...

Well actuall you can have

<span class="robots-nocontent">
<p class="robots-nocontent">

etc.
I was going to write something about it being more of an attribute than a tag.... slipped my mind.

Huh! And I came here to ask a question about nocontent tags too!

Apparently the nocontent tag was adopted by Yahoo, Google and Livesearch - the honour was given to Yahoo for the announcement. Search engine politics no doubt. Got to keep those anti-trust lawsuits down somehow.

I thought it could be used as a tag as follows (but it seems I might be wrong)
<nocontent>
non-content navigation, ads etc
</nocontent>
Consider that an invite for scathing criticism ;)

But has anyone actually used this tag yet - any feedback?

I'm thinking of giving it a go, but am a little concerned about being over-optimised. I subscribe to the philosophy that it is better to be deemed a good amateur than a bad expert :shhh:

My suggestion is to use a new tag - <robotattr> </ Robot>. The inclusion of an item in your page that the browser does not recognize, will not be displayed to the viewer.
