In the past 6 years I have seen many online marketing managers in action. All of whom I have respected extensively. However it gave me the opertunity to learn from their mistakes and to see what is required to absolutely run a online marketing department successfully and with maximum profits and exposure.
The Principles of online marketing management (http://www.digital-m.co.za/articles/online-marketing-management.html)
The biggest problem with Online Marketing Managers is to find one that has the nessasary knowlledge to actually take control of the full job description. Traditional marketing only really effects about 2 or 3 of the entire online marketing spectrum of about 11 to 12 strategies. The true online marketing managers are few, really few!
That's a very interesting article Chatmaster, and I'm sure it will ruffle a few feathers. I agree that there are a number of problems with the concept of online marketing management even.
Online marketing management is too new a role to try and tie down to any particular job description. There's not even an entry for it in Wikipedia yet (I will take care of that by the way and I'll ask Koz to help me).
Also the core tasks of an online marketing manager change every 6 months or so. The Internet is growing in size and scope and the latest craze creates new challenges and opportunities for online advertising. We've already discussed MySpace in the forum recently. They've passed the 100 million member mark, and I still haven't figured a way how we can tap into that or if indeed we can.
Certainly 6 years is an eternity in the field of online marketing, I can't imagine how easy the job must have been for you Chatmaster!!! :working:

Yep, I know this will probably Peeve a few people... :D
I have been in IT now 10 years, 8 of which was related to SEO and online marketing. 6 of which I worked with online marketing managers some with degrees in marketing and even an MBA. They were great leaders and extremely knowledgeable in the field of marketing, no doubt about that. However in the online field they all seemed to lack the adaptability to grow with this extremely new industry. The lack of lateral thinking and new initiatives was mostly replaced with a follow the rest attitude. I am not a very good follower. lol
I think the most important objective with this article to help online marketers understand that all functions of online marketing directly effects SEO. My next article about obtaining natural back links should also explain my theory.
Well I just got my first Marketing Experiments email about the effect of "urgency" on conversions.
It's an old marketing trick apparently, but according to the experiments on three different sites it worked for online transactions too.
It seems the mainstream marketing management people have a few tricks to teach after all.

The fact of the matter is that if you have the ability to merge the knowledge of Conventional marketing and the methods of online marketing as well as gain the technical knowledge you are miles ahead of the most in the industry.
I had a discussion with Richard Mullins from Acceleration once. What an impressive man, his knowledge is phenomenal, but what makes him exceptional is the fact that he can use his marketing knowledge and experience and merge it with knowledge gained with internet marketing. There are a number like him in the world but as I said the are few...
Hi,
Well it's early days with this online marketing management discussion and experiment. This thread hasn't been indexed in Google yet, so it's no suprise we don't rank for "Online Marketing Management" yet.
Good old Microsoft MSN like us though; we're ranked at #12 for the above search, but that result points to the original article and not to the forum - which makes more sense. I always find if you can add the keyword Microsoft on a page, it gets a little more prominence in MSN - but let's see!
You picked a tricky one though Chatmaster - 191 million search results for Online Marketing Management - I guess you like a challenge... LOL

As you said we have many online marketing strategies but its true that we perform only few because only few are effective let me clear you by specifying those few effective strategies. They are blog marketing, link building, video marketing, web 2.0 marketing, social marketing, internet marketing. By performing these strategies Iam sure you can get success in online marketing.
