I recently asked this on a forum of mine and got some good replies so interested to see the response

I gather the majority of the regulars here are from SA so how do you find it?

Im pretty sick of the UK to be honest ;)

I certainly would not be living in South Africa if I didn't completely loved the country! South Africa has friendly and homely people, offers wonderfull nature and good weather. There is alot to do and alot to see, a country with great coast lines and a wonderfull diversity of nature as cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

Haha, i was thinking the same thing :p

Well, personally I'm not entirely happy with SA, but then again it's got problems like any other country - still, my long-term plans include moving overseas, most likely to England

I certainly have issues with South Africa's stupidity within the political spectrum. A laughable democracy and a ruling party that seems to be having trouble on the IQ line. But I am not willing to generalize and state that the entire country is bad...

From what I have heard about England, they have more serious social issues than South Africa... Not a country I want to go visit much less live in.

I think england is a very friendly country, not friendly like Asia but its certainly not 'bad'

I guess you will know better than me. I only know what South Africans visiting the country has told me.

Thanks :) As most of my UK relatives live in the southern-most parts of the UK I suppose I'd end up there at first

Well, the thing to remember is that the grass is always greener on the other side. Many people don't realise this when they immigrate. I know England has social problems, however so does SA, so it doesn't really matter to me :) The reason people often get appalled by the social problems in foreign countries is that they're not used to them - you tend to get inured to problems in your own country

I think the point I was trying to make is that although I love South Africa and its people it has its issues. As Daniel pointed out I sounded way to positive about SA :)

At the end of the day regardless of where you might find yourself, each country has its issues. Switzerland is a beautiful country but nothing much happens there and for young people this can be exceptionally boring. A country like England is filled with incredible history and beauty and most certainly problems of its own. Some of my best friends live in England :)

I am used to people criticizing South Africa and making general comments about this country and I guess making the short statements I did I was generalizing and that is one of the fundamental mistakes people make. I would love to go visit England and Scotland. Europe is also very high on my list, Belgium being probably the country I would love to see the most, as that is where my family originated. But South Africa is special. In terms of the nature and tourism offerings it will never disappoint. It has friendly people and its diversity makes it a very interesting country. But it sadly also has down side of high crime and racial issues that will take many years to be demolished. If you know which places and people to avoid SA has allot of great things to offer.

Well I'm from the UK but I lived in Germany (Stuttgart) for 5 years and Turkey (Antalya) for 4 years.

Germany was a complete shock for me because every aspect of life was so tightly regulated. They did know how to party though. In the summertime there were street parties and festivals everywhere with 1000's of drunk people everywhere, but there was never any trouble like there would be in the UK.

Turkey's the complete opposite. Totally unregulated and chaotic but they manage to get things done eventually. They know how to party as well, but you won't see a bottle or tin anywhere. Even the tramps drink cola....

Well on reflection, the tramps I saw looked to be drinking cola, but it may have had a shot in it....

My father was a soldier so I lived in lots of places in the UK; in fact it'd be quicker to list the places I haven't lived. I think my favourites would be London or Manchester; the only problem with those two were the bomb attacks.

One time I was supposed to go with my brother to do some Christmas shopping in Harrods. Everyone thinks Harrods is expensive, but you could get daft stuff like a tin of bumblebees in saltwater for £2 and that was a hell of a lot better present than a shirt and tie that cost 10 times more at that time.

Anyway, we should have got there early, but we got smashed in the student's union the night before and couldn't drag ourselves out of bed.

The IRA hit Harrods that morning, killing 4 people and injuring a 100. I always say, if it hadn't been for getting drunk on cheap cider, and spending the best part of Saturday recovering in bed, we'd be wearing our wings right now.

There have been 3 bomb attacks in Antalya since I've been here. I swear these bastards are following me around.... and I'm coming to Cape Town soon... haha

I think SA rocks..especially Cape Town! The UK might be first world, with better buildings, economy etc..but I'll choose Cape Town over London any day of the week...;)

I think English weather is under-rated. Having spent 5 months with only 1 hour's rain I kind of miss it. We get 7-8 months of unbearable heat, 2 months of pretty cold, damp weather and I'd only describe the remaining quarter as "comfortable".

It's a very strange year in Turkey though. They've had no rain and reservoirs were so low that they switched off the water for two days to save supplies.

When they switched it back on, there was such a surge that it burst mains pipes everywhere and they've lost a month's supply of water in the last 72 hours.

There's something odd going on for sure..... :titanic:
