Ive been doing a lot of work with stumbleupon lately and its quite amazing what a couple of stumbles can do for you

I received 1,200 uniques to a blog post that took me 10 mins to write

From my own research stumble members tend to stay around on a site a bit more than digg users so its good to try and entice them to sign up to your RSS feed / comment or at least give you a thumbs-up stumble :)

That's very interesting Glen because I had a Turkish site that got 100 or so visitors from Stumbleupon every day so if I scale that by the ratio of English to Turkish language speakers it's indeed, potentially massive traffic.

Two things though. How do you "optimise" to drive that traffic? I'd never heard of Stumbleupon until I saw it in my referral logs.

Secondly, it can't convert very well can it? By definition, these are people who are browsing randomly - but I guess for some sites/situations that's not important.....

1.

Submit to the correct category, otherwise its useless
Write a review on the item is a must, makes people think its worth checking out and Im pretty sure stumbleupon give more credit to it
Add some relevant tags, you have the options so go for it

StumbleUpon users need quality content to stumble something, thats why putting an item in the correct category with good information allows the right people to see it and so if its relevant and GOOD QUALITY then they are more likely to stumble it

2. People kind of do browse randomly, but remember stumbleupon tries to show sites that people have said they liked before and try to show somethign similar so everytime i stumble im never going to see a fashion site or some LoLCat images, i normally see web design tutorials or marketing tips.

StumbleUpon users will click-through pages if you make it easy and the option stand out but a lot of them tend to prefer images and its not so easy to display them full-size and have an option for the user to go elsewhere

Hope that makes sense and helps

thats very simple to solve - you create a simply template that allows a full-screen view but still has html links in it (like on the top or something)

its very simple, but certainly not something people are likely to go to the trouble of doing ;)
