hey there

Well its actually quiet interesting, and a huge topic on its own.

First of all, do you know PR is named after "Larry Page" as he came up with the concept. ( well thats what i read in the Google story)

I reckon that the main criteria when passing page rank is the quality and relevance of inbound links. Google wil pass PR from domain to domain, and internal link to internal link. It boils down to a link algorythm that Google are running on web pages and assigning a numerical value to that page.

One thing to note is that the pr value shown in the Toolbar is NOT neccesarily the ACTUAL page rank.,

An Important tip on maintaining your page rank.

Make sure that you only have ONE home page. ie: make sure you have the proper redirects in place like the non www. Another common mistake is webmaster sometimes use /index.html or default.html and can browse to the site without these extensions.

Creating different versions of your homepage will dilute your PR. Google needs to see 1. Make sure this happens.

Thats it for now, lets see what everyone else has to say,

By the way, by the amount of sites i have seen lately, ranking for competitive keywords with a page rank 0, its got me thinking even more that pr is becoming less and less important.

Well the algorithm can't be explained in detailed...the reason being only Larry Page could answer that accurately.

As for the criteria the page rank of a website in Google is based on the amount of quality backlinks that a website has.The backlinks if purchased should be through the Google adsense account. That is the news going around since the last 2 updates that Google made for PR and Backlinks last october and this january. The PR is based on a formula.

The Page Rank Of A Website depends solely on your inboud links. The PageRank of a website is calculated with the help of the following equation:

PR(A)=(1-d)+(PR OF LINK PAGE 1*D/NO OF LINKS IN PAGE1)+ (PR OF LINK PAGE 2*D/NO OF LINKS IN PAGE2)+.....+(PR OF LINK PAGE P*D/NO OF LINKS IN PAGE P).

Where A,is your website
D is a damping factor =0.85
link page 1,2...,P are the pages that has a link pointing to your website and can be found out by conducting a search on google with link:www.website.com.

Google will also ban the ISP of directories selling links and if the links that have been purchased are not through the adsense account then Google will not crawl it.

Honestly speaking the question is weird....If every body knew the Algorithms that Google implements while updating PR, Backlinks and SERP'S,SEO wouldn't be needed.Everybody would have easily attained their desired results. It is because of these algorithms that Google has an added advantage over other major SE'S.The databases of the spiders are powered by these algos when they crawl websites. As of now with the latest update for PR and backlinks that Google has made it has done so with a different set of algorithms and hence the results this time are shocking.

Honestly, if you have a good all round SEO strategy and you don't just focus on backlinks or one particluar SEO focal point.

It's really what seperates the good SEO's from the bad ones. By having an all round good SEO strategy, when Google does slap us with a nice big GOOGLE bomd or PR update, those who know what they're doing generally stay at the top!

Those that try trick Google, DIE!!! ;-)
