I was wondering if anyone could help answer my question. I recently read that the best way to do internet keyword research for SEO is to run a PPC test on your keywords and then optimise for SEO on the basis of the best converting keywords in terms of PPC? Does anyone else agree with this method?

Hi,

it sounds like a great idea, but of course you are assuming that the conversion behaviour of people who click on sponsored links is the same as that of people who skip past them for the "natural" serps.

I'm thinking that people who skip over the sponsored links are a bit more net savvy and more likely to shop around because they can navigate the web more easily.

I'm speculating though and I could be wrong; so it's got to be worth a try!

Cheers,
Paz.

That sounds like something Google would love or an experienced SEO that wants to make a few bucks selling SEM to you. I tend to disagree with this though.

Paz has a very valid point here. PPC campaigns provide completely different traffic from natural rank. The conversion rates are different as well. The main issue you are dealing with here is to structure your site propperly around the keywords you are mainly targetting. Then built on your content in a natural manner, doing keyword research based on the COMPETITION and not the best conversions on PPC. I am just warning, this sounds like a dodgy statement.

I think thats a great idea as long as you have your target market in mind. Are you only wanting to target users who just go online to shop? Majority of users are searching for information and they usualy ignor the sponsored ads, but they are the ones you want to convert

I know it is true that most users prefer natural search results to sponsored. However on MSN for example, it is very hard to differentiate between sponsored and natural results.

In a study, U.K.-based online marketing firm Harvest Digital surveyed "experienced" Internet users about their attitudes toward search. It was found that 60.8 percent of Yahoo! and 72.3 percent of Google search engine users chose a natural search result as the most relevant.

That still leaves alot of room for sponsored search. I guess it all comes down to behaviour. I am interested to know:
How many people out there correlate the "number one" company on the search listing as the top company in their field?
Is it relevant to you what position the company comes up as?

I know that for myself, there is a little voice that says if they are number 1 then they must be the best- even though I know it just means they ahve the best SEO company.

Hmmm... a number of good and interesting perspectives there. It's definitely true that "some" (I have no idea what percentage) people treat PPC differently to organic results and only want to click on organic results. But then there's so many that just aren't aware or don't care that there's a difference.

I think if you've already been running PPC campaigns and already have access to that kind of info, then you would be foolish not to use it. However, I don't know that I would launch a PPC campaign to find out what I could have found out for free - perhaps even with some common sense. And lets face it, at the end of the day, you're equally as likely to figure out the right keywords to use on PPC as you are without using PPC. Um... sorry - did that make sense? Plus, again, it depends how you setup your PPC. Will you use just broad matches, or phrase matches, etc... ?

What is clear though is that if you have the data, you'll have a good starting place - so long as you've been tracking conversions. If you've not been tracking conversions, it might not be obvious what the data is telling you.

Way back when I first started using AdWords, I found it really confusing. For a week or so I thought I was doing great for the term "search engine submission"....because my click through rate (CTR) was really high. My conversion rate was terrible though. Really bad. Like, < 0.5%

After I figured out how to use the system properly (hehe - what can I say - I just wanted traffic and fast!), I discovered most of my traffic was from people looking for "Free search engine submission" and search engine submission software or tools. So then I introduced negative keywords like "Free", "Software", "Tools", etc... plus some key phrases I did as exact matches only, etc. Then the data started to look a lot healthier - and more useful too.

So, I would have to say yes, it would be useful data if you had it... if you've been tracking it properly. But I wouldn't head down that route just find out what common sense tells me, backed up by checks on a couple of good keyword tools.

In fact, to get the stage of having the genuinely useful data, you have to have done (and you will have done) the keyword research anyway. It's kinda impossible to avoid, if you think about it.

A good way is to use the keyword suggestions Google Adwords Keyword Tool. First you need an AdWords account. Then you start a new PPC campaign site and use the key to finding not only the keywords that people search for their relative popularities.

Realistically, nobody wants to spend the day hidden in Google Analytics or any other product analysis looking at the numbers. But there's a lot of information out there that can help you optimize your PPC (Pay-Per-Click) campaigns. So, let's take a moment to think about the basics.
