Actually I'm not keen on SEO contests. They all have the same thing in common:

Site must include either a SEO World Championship text link or a banner. (The banner may be linked or not linked)
Text link, copy the code and place it on your website or choose one of the banners.

I helped RZ with backlinks with the previous marine (thingy) contest in 2003/4 can't even remember. He got close to 100k backlinks from me. But the end result was the guy with the most backlinks won. It wasn't the best SEO but the SEO who rallied the most support in the community that won. It is a crappy idea and in my view holds no grounds or respect...

Unfortunatly you can't use services like blogger 'cos the main domain needs to be registared after the keyword is anounced. Chatmaster, I'd go with PHP, mostly because its more faminiar to me. But I'll be wanting to do a static HTML site (that might change later but am not too sure now).

well, it generally takes a while as you have to tell the main DNS guys to update their servers, but they get so many requests, etc :(

I am not aware of any fool proof way except checking the server headers. Perhaps Paz has an idea of a easier or more effective way. However keep in mind the reason they are allowing this. It is because contestants can get each other disqualified in this way. So I do understand the reasons for them to allow it.
You can check server headers here http://seopen.com/seopen-tools/header-checker.php Doing a traceroute should give you specifics, but then you need the domain first.

Looks like the competition is screwed before it starts. I'm don't know that a non-relevant 301 domain redirect would give an advantage, but most people acknowledge that it probably will.

There is a way to pick up 301 redircts, but it's only available temporarily maybe. MSN are showing pages with redirects as a plain; "This document has moved here (http://www.digital-m.co.za)." at this time.

That means we would have to check the backlinks of all contestants in MSN, and we would also have to check the robots.txt isn't blocking MSN (I'm not sure if a robots.txt is ever picked up for a redirected domain though....), then of course you"d have to check for robots.txt cloaking.... the whole thing's a nightmare.

I know that Daniel has an old (PR6) domain belonging to a company called Bluesouth. It would help Koz, and Bluesouth if they redirected it to your new domain. The domain was never promoted directly because it had a name like web-developers-web-development-company dot com.... but it had a link from Bluesouth. Ask Daniel or Blazingpie for the details.

Hi all! Thought you'd like an update. Our site is looking good now, (ry$$1e did some excellent work with images for our header (you probly need to hit refresh). Google and MSN has our entire site indexed and Yahoo is on the way. We also are now ranking in the top 200 for both Google and MSN. The site has also been fixed and is now functional in IE (yes some people demand that).
