When do you have enough traffic

I got a question: If you want to sell an advert/banner/link on your site, how much traffic should you have first before you bother offer your space?

Whatever someone is willing to 'want', 500 uniques a day might be ok for some people, might take 5,000 uniques a day for others

You can offer space to people from whenever you like, just if you have less uniques or less traffic, expect to receive less money. For e.g. i have a forum that is less active then this forum, and i get offers from people to advertise banners, so even small traffic sites get offers

There are many factors. I will see if I can mention a few of the top of my head.

Community sites
Community sites normally mean that it is a site that has an existing database of members. E.g a forum. The size of the community would normaly determine the worth of advertising.
Niche Sites
Niche sites has great value. It can be a blog, forum, news or any site of value it immidiately increases the pricing. E.g Combine niche with the previous or next point or both and you are looking at very expensive advertising.
Relation/Theme
If the theme of the site is the same as the theme of the advertiser, advertisers tend to be willing to pay more. It means that they will get well targetted traffic that has a better chance of conversion.
Rankings
In many cases sites that rank well get advertising offers especially if they rank for keywords that the advertiser would like to rank for.
Brand
If your site has a powerfull brand that can give value in association advertisers are willing to pay just to be associated with you.
Quantity
The quantity of banners
The quantity of other advertisers
Unique visitors
offcourse :)
Placement
The placement of the ads on the site and the actual pages
Pricing structure
This will have a huge effect on the cost per acquisition and ultimately effect the ROI.
Demographics
Age group, Income blah, blah of the visitors to your site. If it is what the advertiser feels is their market you have some valuable space!

I think the value of a banner also depends on the market, as well as traffic. We discussed an ads pricing tool (http://forums.digital-m.co.za/showthread.php?t=45) in the forum.

Our Digital Marketing SA site was valued at 18 dollars a month back then, it's now valued at 38 bucks a month; that's almost enough to cover my pharm bills....

LOL, true. Well thats just it, I'm trying to figure out if its more beneficial to do go affiliate, or do a monthly charge for something like a banner.

Koz, affiliates only start making money once they hit some serious traffic. Pay banners is much better in the begining. However that also depends on what the commission structure is in relation to the expected click tru rate. The problem is, normally affiliates gets paid per conversion and that means you need about 100 click throughs for 2-5% conversions. To have a 100 click throughs you need alot of traffic, about 1000 uniques @ 10% success rate.

Its not solely based on the amount of traffic your site gets.

The basic premise is : the more targeted your ads are to the content or niche or visitor profile of your site, the better the conversions should be. (Think Adsense ;) )
For example just because portals like IOL get high traffic it doesn't always translate into high conversions. Due to the untargeted approach of a portal, alot of their adverts are for branding purposes. Thats why we also offer a CPM model to very high traffic sites.

On the other hand a site about flying with a much smaller traffic base may have great conversions on a travel booking engine campaign, giving a much higher EPC.

Well there is no limit of traffic, it could be in millions so you can sell your space more worthy. I mean to say as much as you have more traffic on your blog or your website you can sell your space, link or banner with more price.
