Using adwords will not be an effective way of tracking or calculating keyword value. First of all it is displayed on several sites , not just Google and offcourse merging the information from different SERP results can also cause a problem. However it is a very interesting idea...

Perhaps a thhtuuupid question, but apart from wordtracker, webceo and a few others, IS THERE a google specific keyword tool that does not rely on adwords? So i like to know my impressions and all, but it still doesn't give me what I want - amalgamating google trends, adwords, webseo, wordtracker and yes goodkeywords v2 (personally I like it - and yes I am waiting to be shot-carved-into-itty-bits :tools:)

I try to get a cross reference from these for my clients and do daft things like multiply the results from wordtracker by 50 (at the moment) based on research figures - that was the latest from nielsen, and has probably altered some since yesterday...

now why do I stupid stuff like that? because they want to know it... I explain and talk to myself and carry on (in a very diplomatic a *knowing* manner, but they want the data...) so that's the best I can do..

Any gems I have overlooked in my faffing?

And yes we do tracking depending on the client - preferences selected pre-me including:
webtrends (personal opinion :titanic:)
omniture (personal opinion :score10: ) and
Xiti (personal opinion  ) to name a few I-me-like....

but REALLY would be nice to have keyword research by SE.. why is this so hard? If it is paid for and comes with strict *spam guidelines* it might work? After adwords, I don't think it's too much of a come down really.... yes yes I know tons of people make stupid money with Adwords - good for him (need to update this with a link tomorrow when I get to the PC that has that link in my Faves... so a hypocrite? naaahhhhh.. jealous... no. just peed that I can't do it without adwords and smacking-myself-on-proverbial-wishing-i-had-the-perfect-answer) ... I am still hoping to simply make the web a great research and find resource tool - you know - like find what you want... With a *teensy* bit of money made in the process....

....

I would like to say that while I think some keyword 'research' is NB - especially for client presentation - it is NOT the B-All and end all of on page seo...

and I DO think that a VALID, real time, SE focussed keyword search count would be of interest, it might be more so for the long tail options it offers as opposed to HUGE-TERM-OPTIMISE-FOR-IT-NOW-OR-ELSE!!!! ;-) [ja right.. ]opportunities ... or lack thereof due to the spammers :sucks: ...

Yeah Aaron's keyword research tool is very useful, but treat the data with a pinch of salt.

Also bear in mind that

the keyword research tool groups plural and singular searches into one result
the alternative keyword results are displayed in alphabetical order so you have to deconvolute them
the tool's often broken returning an overture error message; just keep hitting "submit" until it works.

The best suggestion in the original post was to create a short Adwords campaign for different keyword phrases and look at relative traffic. That assumes that people who click on the sponsored clicks and people who pass over them are otherwise similar, which they're not if you think about it, but it's still a good idea though.

Hi There

Good question,

Ill try and sum it up in a couple of bullets,

1. Content is King

2. Keyword density is important for onsite factors

3. Fresh content added regularly is important

4. Gives good destination pages ( and also relevant ) for your offsite link building campaign, specifically deep linking.

5. Once indexed you are able to submit these articles to article directories for relevant backlinks.

mmm, have i missed anything
