A very interesting article about broadband in the UK. Can this mean that the UK is experiencing good growth in the online market?
UK broadband numbers keep rising (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6228367.stm)
Last I heard was that broadband was relatively cheap in the UK because of strong competition in the market. I think the ISP's have been suprised and are struggling with the takeup of unlimited bandwidth offers though... no doubt due to the rampant growth of file sharing.
The competition's not there in South Africa yet, LOL, but I'm sure that the growth of broadband will mean we will have to have a re-think about some of our sites, particularly the usage of multimedia objects such as Flash and other bandwidth monsters. A nightmare for SEO in my view....
I pay £14.95 per month for unlimited 2mb broadband...(I'm in the UK)
Well I have a very good friend in Turkey who pays £20 a month for 1 Meg unlimited bandwidth, but there's no competition there. It's 100% government owned and subsidised because they want to promote eCommerce.... be interesting to hear prices and situations in SA and other countries.

I thought it would be a good idea to calculate SA fees for you all so we can compare. I asume these fees exclude the Service Provider fees for providing you with the connection.
1 meg line = £37/month
4 Gig Shaped = £50/month
So it will cost you about £90/month in SA and then the bandwidth is limited.
You forget "installation" fees Chatmaster. For ADSL they charge you installation even if you already have a land line.

So do you have to sign a contract or something in return for not paying instalation fees?
No you just fill out a form at the post office and a few days later you're online... Did I mention they offer fixed IP for free in TR too... LOL

Gah, if it weren't for the language difficulties, dodgy worksmanship and food I'd move there :p

I decided to make a post on the top ADSL forum in SA (http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=62924) to get some advice from the Broadband guru's over there. I mean, seriously this sucks big time if I calculated the costs correctly. Then it doesn't surpise my that SA has been the "blackhole" of the internet for such a long time.
