Hi all,
I am thinking of starting up an online business / Ecommerce. I would like to know what i should be doing SEO/ OM. I would like to heavily promote the site and get it in all over the nation...
Any suggestions would be appriciated.
Thanks
I'd choose a decent niche and start doing some traffic research and look for a search engine friendly CMS - the best ones run under Linux/php hosting plans in our experience. I'd also buy a domain name with your major keyword in it, unless you have an idea that will go viral.

Thanks for your Response Paz, Please can you give me some examples of CMS and decent places to visit to advertise/VM the site/ideas etc.
Would having 2 domains hurt? a Domain name with the Keyword in it and the actual domain name of the company? And redirect them to the Domain name of the company.
Hi,
Well the choice of CMS depends on the type of site you're building and it's size. If it's going to be a huge (more than 100 pages) then you'll need a full CMS, but there are some good ones for free eg joomla.
If you're just planning on adding up to 100 pages then you can add content very easily with a Wordpress blog. You'll need to tweak it so it looks more like a site and less like a blog! Wordpress doesn't come with a shopping basket or query form though, but I'm sure there are plugins!
We have a thread on places where you can promote your site in SA;

There are all kinds of issues with re-directing yout keyword domain to your brand one. For instance when you submit your keyword domain to one of the sites above, it will be inspected manually and will likely be rejected because of the redirect. There are also automated checks that can check later if a domain has been re-directed so don't try any tricks!
Having said that if you have a non-competitive keyword then you can probably get away without the keyword in the domain, but the level of competition could increase in the years ahead as more sites in South Africa go online.
I think we need more info. You can PM me with your keyword and how you want to monetise the site eg sales vs. advertising.
Cheers,
Paz.

Hi Snoopy_inc, SEO is a very broad term.First have a little know about the techniques used in SEO and OM and then analyze the content of your site.....and then get back to the techniques. The techniques are best related to the content of your site.....like there is article writing, press release, affilaite marketing, link building and many other.
Have personally consult a SEO company to make your doubts crystal clear...:grin:
