Its an interesting article on tips to optimise your blog (though Im sure you already know that from the title :p)

While most of the tips will illicit a 'duh' response from the bowels of your throat (It's a recent discovery that the throats of most SEOers have evolved bowls. It's there to help facilitate communicate with corporate clients :p) two tips that made me think was 'offer posts via email' (as not everyone grasps or wants to use RSS) and 'Decide On Full Or Partial Feeds'. This second one made me think. If you use full feeds, scrapers and blackhats could have a field day with your feed, yet it is easier for your subscriber to read your posts (hence putting ads in the full feeds, as if they didn't go to your site they wont see the ads there). Personally, i'd want to show only partial feeds - wouldnt want scrapers to have it too easy :p

For a new blog, I'd block all post, comments and RSS feeds as well as trackbacks with a nofollow tag.

As you say, if you have a full field and your blog is new, then it'll get scraped and outrank you until you pick up links. I've a feeling that a new blog will come second in any duplicate content penalty in Google too.

Interlinking your blog to previous articles will help though. Not many of the scraper sites strip those.

yeah, blocking all comments, etc is a good thing to do if people see that there's not a lot of comments they may think that the blog sucks and won't cme back.

It's funny how complex it's become to try start a blog :p

I don't understand that. Why would you block comments? All the best blogs have comments. And hopefully its not true that most internet users are too scared to leave comments if no one else did... thats a little insecure don't you think?

no, its nothing about fear or insecurity. It's just that if ppl see a blog has comments, then it look busy which means there's a reason to post as its worth their time.

No sorry, I didn't explain myself properly, I meant block the rss feeds and trackbacks on a new blog with a nofollow tag... These will be empty and indexed as duplicates, in my experience; and probably end up as supplemental too - dragging the whole blog down with them.

The other reason is that people running established scraper sites will search for feeds, and if they use your content on their blog, you'll have other problems too later... hide them from the SE's to start with would be my advice.

You shouldnt ever block the comments, by reading comments you can know what people think about your blog what best you have and where you lack
