Hi,
It's a very interesting article, and she writes very well.
Yes, very often our search engine marketing clients here in South Africa will want to rank highly for a vague term such as "blue widgets" and we will always try to convince them that "buy blue widgets online" or "blue widget advice" and other variations brings benefits.
Firstly, it's easier to get good search engine rankings for the longer keyword phrases.
Secondly, as Jill Whalen points out, the longer phrases convert better. It makes sense if you think about it; a visitor who arrives with the search phrase "blue widgets" is probably just surfing the net for background information, and likely hasn't decided to buy just yet.
However, if someone arrives with the phrase "buy blue widgets online" then they are more likely to be on a mission aren't they? While it's true that there won't be much traffic for the "buy online" variation, it will certainly convert better.
The key is find as many of the other variations as you can eg "shopping for blue widgets online", "blue widget prices"... etc They don't bring much traffic individually, but it's quality traffic, and if you can rank for a whole bunch of them then you will surely claw back more money from your search engine optimisation investment!
Cheers,
Paz.

Yah, Jill Whalen... the seo world would have been very boring without her!
I see her site the-seo-bitch.info is still live, one of her arch enemies Compar has made it no secret that he absolutely hates her, lol
But Jill has contributed allot to the SEO community over the years, she knows what she is talking about, no doubt about that! But her opinions IMO are limited and with lack of maturity causing her to often miss the more important facts pressented to her.
Yeah,
I love it when SEO masters (and mistresses) go head to head! Compar certainly has a lot of respect from me, but you're right that there are too many vendettas in the SEO community.
One of my favourite SEO reads is by a woman who calls herself Dazzlindonna. She keeps a much lower profile than others, but she writes a lot of sense. For instance I first came across the idea of targeting long keyword phrases (discussed by Jill above) nearly two years ago. She called it long-tail SEO back then. In fact thinking about it now, she was "blogging" about SEO a year before anyone had ever heard of it!
Have a look at the site and see what you think:

She doesn't have time to update it as much as she used to, but I still pop back regularly.
Cheers,
Paz.

Yah DD, I certainly have lots of respect for her she is one of the legends! I have known her from the forums for a couple of years now but she has not been active that much lately. But I guess with the SEO communities going through so much change with the newbies frequenting our previous domains in mass, it kind of makes you feel not at home! That's what makes me so happy about this forum, I am in good company and right at home.
