I am busy writing an article about the the Google patent on 'Information retrieval based on historical data' and wondered what everybody else thinks about it.

My main reason for writing the article is that recent research I have done, makes me believe that this is being applied into the Google algo. It is a very long read but my main focus will be on the historical data kept for links. Now to make it as short and sweet as possible I believe that one very important thing SEO's must look at is not changing links to often on existing pages.

In other words when obtaining back links and when giving back links do not buy links from companies like linux.org that changes their links every few months.

Another point I will be making is that fresh content being published on sites might have more strength when your link is located contextually from day one rather than added later.

There are a few other points I will address but wondered what all of you thought of this patent?

I can't seem to get the link to work just search for it at http://www.uspto.gov

OK, I got a link to work. Information retrieval based on historical data (http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-P****r?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=/netahtml/PTO/search-bool.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&co1=AND&d=PG01&s1=20050071741&OS=20050071741&RS=20050071741)
You can read Randfish's summary (http://www.seomoz.org/article/google-historical-data-patent) might be easier :)

Yes the patent explains a lot about Google's algo, especially on the sandbox.

I was just getting to grips with it, and along came a new Google patent on phrase based search. It's very interesting and I'm still assessing the ramifications; particularly for Google bombing;

Yah, I wrote an article about it for an SEO book I attempted to write.I eventually gave up on it after having to re-write many of the facts I published. Decided Aaron is all the SEO world need for now, I'll stick to writing articles. However I focused on the age factor from a content perspective and now have a slightly different opinion on the linking factors.
William Slawski in my opinion is the professor of Google patents. Love reading his versions of patents.

Yep, you are spot on. Can't fix it though it will keep on changing it back.

Hmmmm but that filtering is one of the reasons why we get so many new members who don't post.... thread titles with vertain keywords are automatically blocked.

How about a url like this.... remove the **
