Hi,
I have a webpage which is ranked on the first page of google for my desired keyword.
But now i want to again push it higher......so i am considering to create a new page or directory with my desired keyword name and redirect this old page to the new one.
Will my new page rank higher in the search engines and does the backlinks which are already to my old page count towards my new page..if i redirect my old page to the new one.
Well there are a lot of questions in there but yes if you do a 301 redirect to the new page all of the rankings and links will be transferred to the new one in time.
The problem is that the new page may not necessarily rank better if it is over-optimised and keyword stuffed for example.
If you have a page that is ideally optimised and ranking well, but you want to improve its rankings then my first suggestion would be that you get more backlinks to it. Other factors can apply though. I think we need you to tell us your keyword phrase and website URL....

I am not sure but it might hurt your rankings both for the existing page and the new page. I did something of this kind in the past and learned a somewhat hard lesson.

Google reps have been pretty vague/silent about this. If it is easy to assume the target url (i.e the link uses the target url as a parameter) it is possible that will establish a virtual link in the webgraph - and then send PR even through the script. That IS what they do with urls the discover via form input.
So it "might" depend on whether the tracking script really obscures the target url. Or not - as I said, this is indefinite territory. It might well depend on factors we're not considering, or vary in different situations.
It looks like using no-follow is now problematic
It's effect on the available PR for OTHER links on the page is what is problematic. It is still a certainty that rel="nofollow" will not vote any PR through that particualr link.
Whatever you are doing now (whatever Google has already indexed) is indeed being treated in this newly communicated, or "revised" way. Perhaps you can analyze your current situation and see whether you are satisfied with the current results.

My advice is not only links but quality links from themed and fresh unique contents to avoid any issue and increase rankings

does your old page have your desired keywords in it? ie: somedomain.com/keyword1-keywords2.html
if you are in a HIGHLY competitive niche and your old page doesn't have your keywords in it then MAYBE you can consider 301'ing to a the new page with keywords in it after all every little bit helps in competitive search verticals.
otherwise just build 20-30 links from different sources. you should see it pop up to #1 in a non competitive niche.

The new page will be more optimised than the old one but, as it won't be as old as the original page, it would be good to know what will happen to both the old and new page's ranking. Also, will the old page need to be kept on the server to maintain some kind of ranking in the SEs as I'm wondering as may no longer exist will it eventually be removed from the SEs even though traffic is being fed through to a new, equivalent page?

That is really a good effort. Try to build more & more links.

Actually, I think there would be a bad effect on your rankings if you will redirect you old page to the new one. It would better if you will build more backlinks for both pages.

Once you make redirection it definitely will be counted, all those backlink and credit of the old page will be transferred to the newly created page but make sure you new page talks about the same product or service which old page did till date.

I think its wise to maintain the old website than redirecting to a new domain name.

I will say that i agree with Paz. IF you have the page ranking well then i suggest you keep at it with the link building. Go over your titles, description and content to make sure its all correct. Then remember your H1 tags too. You'll get your page up there with the best of them. Goodluck.
