I read that in April 32 million domain names were temporarily registered and then cancelled within 5 days.
It's a growing problem of abuse of the domain name purchase system, whereby you can register a domain name, put up sponsored links on the site, and cancel and renew the registration every 5 days without paying a cent. The whole thing's automatic, registration, cancellation and site content.
These people don't promote the sites, they don't need to because of the random nature of the internet. They're happy if a site makes 1 cent a year because if they have 35,000,000 sites; that's.... well it's a lot of money!
The only problem I can see might be if there's some network disruption and you can't get online to cancel 6 million domain names at the end of 5 days.... You could end up with a big bill!!
