Hi all,

Rumour has it that Microsoft is going to buy Yahoo! This rumour has been floating around for a few months now, but is it going to happen?

This could possibly be a great collaboration that'll give Google a run for its money. Would Microsoft really want to do this after investing so much into MSN and its Live Software initiative?

What are your thoughts on this?

Found the info at: http://www.thestreet.com/_googlen/tech/internet/10293505.html?cm_ven=GOOGLEN&cm_cat=FREE&cm_ite=NA

Cheers, Koz

If MS ever did buy up yahoo completely, it'd only be good news for Google as MS cant produce decent software, let alone a decent SE :P

Hi,

apparently Microsoft have issued a "no comment" so there must be some truth to it. Yahoo stock is under-valued in my view, and after the recent teaming up with E-Bay and hence PayPal is in a strong position.

Yahoo is also gaining ground for it's YPN sponsored advertising. It's also an important web portal so it could make sense for Microsoft, who've got tons of cash they can't get rid of.

But if it happened then there would effectively only be two search engines and I'm sure the US competition regulators would allow that to happen would they?

Cheers,
Paz.

I really dont see how Yahoo would even allow themselves to to be bought by Microsoft.

After reading the "story of Google" ( very good by the way), it was interesting to note that Yahoo were offered the Google search technology very early in the google days and turned it down, they didnt think it was good enough. It was too expensive, at $ 1 Million.

Ha ha ha.

Someone is kicking themselves for that.

Anyway, back to MS and Yahoo. If there is some truth to the matter, i find it all very confusing. MS have just recently pulled away from showing the overture / Yahoo paid ads on the MSN network as they have developed their own.
If this kind of aquisition was in their long term plans, then they are playing games and maybe have taken too much onto their plate, especially going into the launch of Windows Live,

Maybe they should focus on fixing their Bugs...

Bill need a lie down, apparently he is in Cape Town at the moment, having one.

Nothing yet. I wonder how many of these stories are "leaked" to get the major players involved some free publicity.

This reminded me of this article http://www.microsoft-watch.com/article2/0,2180,1907746,00.asp

I would say that Microsoft will be making a good deal if they would buy Yahoo! This will however raise a question on how that will effect the dominance on the internet with Microsoft then moving in to obtain a very large Yahoo user database and excellent retention structure, not to mention far more superior SE...

Daniel I have to agree with you to a large extend. This type of buy would be planned ahead and if MS actually are planning this... it most certainly are impulsive or badly planned. Perhaps Yahoo! or MS are just playing the old corporate game of crying wolf to see how many get's scared.

lol

No matter how I sometimes hate Google, they are miles ahead and without any doubt are planning ahead with great initiatives. Google do not need to be scared of anybody at this stage. My money is on a new SE moving in soon as it seems like MSN and Yahoo! are completely off track as far as where search is going. Yahoo! to a great extend is following the leader and MS is still old school and lacks the Google talent of lateral thinking.

Yahoo has also becoming increasingly common, and is sponsored and YPN ads. Its also a major web portal, so it might make sense for Microsoft, which have tons of money you can not get rid of it.
